There’s not much to a Metrocard. Some goldish yellow, some orange, blue, white on the back, and that big black bar. It’s the smiling, pleasant face of a mass transit system that in reality is actively trying to crush your spirits. It’s even missing a corner to show you how fun and quirky it is. But take a look at what artist Nina Boesch has done with the almost-rectangle’s few simple hues.

With what must be endless patience, Boesch has cut and composed thousands of discarded Metrocards to make stunning mosaics of iconic NY scenes and portraits. It almost makes me feel guilty for trying to recycle and refilling my card.
