In in 1989, nine months away from death, Keith Haring participated in a site-specific art show for the Lesbian and Gay Community Services Center, choosing the second-floor men’s room. He filled the space with a most exuberant orgy you ever did see, naming it “Once Upon a Time.” This hidden gem recalls the once upon a time before the AIDS epidemic, when genitals and orifices were ample and ran free. The bathroom has been gutted, stripped of toilets, stalls and sinks. This is now a meeting place, open to the public through March. Since recent conservation and patching up of holes in Haring’s mural, the committee is still deciding whether to leave ‘em be or to ask other artists’ for a hand to fill said holes. Badum tish.
