One of the female pioneers of graffiti, Lady Pink—aka Sandra Fabara—is working with high school students in her native Queens to create another enormous mural on a wall of the Hell Gate bridge near Steinway Street and 23rd Road. The mural is set to be 65 feet by 13 feet and will celebrate the neighborhood’s predominantly Greek heritage with depictions of Olympian gods such as Zeus and Poseidon; it’s replacing another collaboration between Lady Pink and students at the Frank Sinatra School of the Arts. These murals are part of an ongoing project to deter graffiti in the area: because Lady Pink is such a respected street artist, potential vandals “wouldn’t hit it…So not only is it pretty, but it also stays clean,” says Antionio Meloni of the Anti-Crime Agency, who helped organize the project.
