Journalist and my hero Julia Ioffe snapped and tweeted this photo of the protests in Moscow, cementing it instantly as “Russia’s Tiananmen Square.” It’s iconic alright, and big kudos for Ioffe braving days of protests and to whoever took the kid here, but what you don’t see is the ranks upon ranks of riot police advancing and allegedly cornering thousands of people, clubbing heads and chucking Russians to such a point that they’re being investigated for excessive force. See those videos below. That’s the  true face of those dissident masses. There’s a positive to all this violence: Now, maybe now, a change is gonna come? C’mon, Putin, the world is watching.

Warning: Graphic and upsetting.
