Come 2016, New York’s transit system will be home to 300 new subway cars. According to a press release from Montreal-based manufacturer Bombardier Transportation, the cars are their new R179 models, complete with all manner of energy-efficient bells and whistles. The MTA is paying $600M for them- partly funded by $306M in federal money. Quell your anger at government spending, some good may come of this outside of those lousy C train cars finally being put to rest. The cars will be manufactured in Plattsburgh, NY and will create jobs through 2016, when the cars will be completed. However, ten pilot cars will be put into service by the third quarter of 2014, so that’s exciting. Plus it’s much more comfortable to be delayed on a new train than an old one.
