A mother and daughter aged 76 and 38 were stabbed to death in their apartment in Kazan, Russia between Friday and Sunday. Above the corpses, someone had scribbled “Free Pussy Riot” in a blood-looking substance yet unconfirmed by the Russian poice. It is unclear if the unknown murderer wrote the slogan, but that hasn’t stopped the entire Russian media to blast the already-terrified citizens with “People Have Begun to Kill for Pussy Riot” headlines.

It is unclear yet what has happened, but Pussy Riot’s lawyer has condemned the act as “a dirty provocation” by “some freaks using Pussy Riot’s band name.” In a Russian statement to Gazeta, Pussy Riot Nadia’s husband and ANIMAL’s only direct contact Pyotr Verzilov says:

This crime looks savage and monstrous with this signage on the walls… The Government of Russia is used to doing everything clumsily. Thus, there are massive suspicions the special police have something to do with this signage. It’s hard to imagine who benefits from this however.

Naturally, he hasn’t directly accused the Kremlin of butchering the women… although it appears Gazeta might have twisted the quote to infer it, writing “According to the activist, the murder in Kazan was implemented to throw a shadow over Pussy Riot supporters. He continues to tweet about the ongoing investigation, pointing out that the press hadn’t originally reported the “Free Pussy Riot” sign and is at this point “70% sure” that the “bloody” scribbled was an provocation by the special police.

Verzilov ads that just four days ago, Eastern Orthodox Church Leader Father Chaplin — “sort of like what you might get if Rush Limbaugh and Pat Robertson squeezed into the cassock of an Orthodox priest” — spookily spoke out against FEMEN-instigated terrible misguided protest: “People are burning crosses today, they might start killing tomorrow.”

So, what happened? Is this a Helter Skelter government conspiracy or, as officer Andrey Sheptitsky theorizes, the work of a psychotic drug addict? Whatever it is, it’s horrible.
