U.S. District Court Judge Richard Sullivan ruled today that several arrests of protesters at the 2004 Republican National Convention in New York City were made without probable cause. According to Sullivan, video of the arrests, which took place on Fulton Street in the Financial District, “makes it clear that marchers were trying to comply with police instructions.” Consent for the march was revoked too quickly for protesters to have adequate time to leave the scene before police began making arrests, says Sullivan effectively stifling the right to assembly on that day over eight years ago.
