When Hurricane Sandy hit NYU Hospital, it killed power, forced evacuations, and prompted an amazing, successful baby delivery in the middle of the storm. Though no human lives were lost in the ordeal, the lives of thousands of lab mice–and years of scientific research–were. Though the loss of so many animal lives is sad on its own, it’s even more tragic when you consider that the mice, which are used for cancer research, ”are genetically modified for certain research and took years to produce,” according to the Daily News. “This does not equate to a loss of life,” said a source at the hospital, “but it is extremely disheartening to see years of research go down the drain.”
In semi-related news, the city’s rat population is doing just fine.
