Yesterday, footage of two police officers brutally beating a man who was sleeping in a Jewish youth center surfaced online. Now, the NYPD and the Brooklyn District Attorney’s office are both launching investigations into the officers’ behavior, and one of the officers has been put on “modified duty.” The beaten man was charged with felony assault after the Oct. 8 incident, as officers claimed in a criminal complaint that he attacked them first. But the surveillance video clearly shows officers Luis A. Vega and Yelena Bruzzese repeatedly striking Ehud Halevi, who is unarmed.
According to Rabbi Moishe Feiglin, a director at the center, Halevi had permission to stay there overnight. “It was very painful to see one of our members being treated like that,” he said. “It seemed like a senseless beating and we felt compassion for this young guy being beaten like that. We all need to have more compassion.”
