Two 25-foot-tall, electric-powered oil pumps were just installed in a Midtown lot on 8th Avenue and 45th Street. They’ll be turned on next week, for four hours a day, to pump… “conceptual crude.” Because it’s art. Gotcha!
Artist Josephine Meckseper hopes that the functional kinetic sculptures — fashioned after mid-20th-century equipment from a former Texas pump jack capital — will give the passerby “a glimpse” into reality, into our daily struggle and desire for entertainment. Speaking of entertainment, she could have made them a lot noiser, but the artist “didn’t want it to happen artificially.”
Like, a lot noisier. “If they were out here for a few years, they would start to make that horrible screeching noise. It’s a sound that I actually kind of love.”
