As opioid-based prescription pills continue to proliferate and become more popular than heroin, pharmacies all across New York are increasingly getting robbed for their stashes, just like illegal drug dealers. The latest incident took place in Harlem earlier today when two men attempted to rob the RX Center pharmacy on the corner of First Avenue and 119th Street. The gunmen told the pharmacist to give them Oxycontin and Percocet and while he fulfilled the order, another worker tripped the silent alarm and police were quickly on the scene. One of the men reportedly surrendered (although he later got away somehow) while another brandished a gun and is believed to have been shot dead by a retired police officer who was at a gas station across the street. About a decade ago, when pharmacy robberies were huge in the New England area, you could walk into a pharmacy in Boston and see a sign in big, bold letters, prominently displayed: "We do not stock OxyContin at this pharmacy."
It was kind of surreal.
