There’s no denying that rats are a huge problem in the NYC transit system, but a lawmaker’s plan to fine straphangers for eating on the subway and platforms reeks worse of nanny-state politics than the food being consumed out of styrofoam containers. State Senator Bill Perkins is proposing an all out ban and a $250 fine for anyone caught consuming, which is plain stupid, since the problem isn’t food, it’s littering. (Photo: digital_trash/flickr)

They should just ban native New Yorkers from the subway system.
Why half-ass it in a City teeming with rats, why not ban food eating in New York?
The whole thought of eating on a subway platform is nuts anyway, they reek. But yeah, banning eating is the stupid. The should have tea trollies and make some money that way.
Preventing people from eating is just step 1 in the subway rule book that should be put in place. Pork buns, fish soup, garlic bagels…I don’t need to smell that. How many times have you stepped in spilled food or coffee? People are ANIMALS and then discard the food wherever they want.
I agree with the ban.
Good for them. I hope it goes through.
