After four years of incremental progress, the endeavors of Jackson Heights residents to turn 78th Street into a no-car play street 24/7 are finally successful . Since 2008, residents have petitioned to have the street closed to traffic, at first only on Sundays, and then two years ago for the months of July and August. Now, after successfully lobbying the Queens Community Board to change its position, 78th Street will be closed to traffic year-round, with plans being made for a redesigned space that will make it more than just an empty street.
