The MTA is expanding its initiative of fare enforcement to combat citizens stealing rides from trains and buses, which it claims loses the city around $100 million in revenue. Violators will be issued $100 fines by groups of “Eagle Teams” largely made up of retired law enforcement workers. The NYPD announced that they had arrested 1,200 fare beaters a month ago, double the number of arrests up to that point in 2011. Fare jumpers, you have been warned!
Also, there are additional police officers now stationed on targeted subway routes, specifically, on every train in the Bronx and the 7 and A trains in Queens between midnight and 6 a.m. on weekends. There should be that much less crime…between midnight and 6 a.m. on weekends.
