Apparently, youth violence fueled by boasts and threats on sites like Facebook and Twitter has gotten so out of hand in New York that the NYPD is doubling the size of its gang unit in order to monitor social networks. “By capitalizing on the irresistible urge of these suspects to brag about their murderous exploits on Facebook, detectives used social media to draw a virtual map of their criminal activity over the last three years,” Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said in a statement about the expansion.
There has to be a way to use gang members’ newfound affinity for social media towards peace. Remember in the 1970s, when crews would use breakdancing to settle disputes nonviolently? Instead of using jabs on Twitter to fuel actual violence, why not let the social media fights be an end unto themselves? Pinterest battle, anyone?
