This is only the trailer for the upcoming short documentary, “Melodico,” to be released by Awèn Films, but it is in and of itself a remarkable glimpse at a man, and by extension, a community. Tony Maiorino is a barber and an aspiring singer who lives and works out of the Bronx’s Little Italy neighborhood. Though the narrative of the documentary is ostensibly about Maiorino’s quest for some recognition as a singer, it looks as though the film is just as much a profile of the historically Italian-American area around Arthur Avenue as it is a profile of the barber who would be a singer. We are privy to glimpses into the social meeting place of the barber shop, the high-stress past time of the horse races, and the explosively vibrant Festival of Saint Anthony. Break out the cannoli. Should be a pretty neat little film.
