New York’s International Center of Photography presents Christer Stromholm’s “Les Amies de la Place Blanche,” his most acclaimed, cult classic series. Mingle with the prostitutes and hustlers in Pigalle, Paris.

Don’t confuse him with a social tourist. Stromholm lived there. He was a friend. “It was then—and still is—about obtaining the freedom to choose one’s own life and identity,” the Swedish photographer says of his “girlfriends of La Place Blanche” series first published and sold out in 1983. These polished noir shots of young transexual sex workers, in and out of drag and the intimate moments and transformations in between.

If this is too pretty, there’s always the gritty depressing ouvre of the “Patron of Whores” Scot Sothern.
