The “vandals” in their 20s who violently hacked at two trees in Inwood’s Isham Park have been captured. Apparently, they were ”bored” and “throwing the ax at the tree for sportsmanship and fun.” They were charged with criminal possession of an illegal gravity knife, criminal mischief, possession of a graffiti tool and making graffiti. Wait, what? This? If graffiti is still “writing or drawings scribbled, scratched, or sprayed illicitly on a wall or other surface in a public place,” then the NYPD’s understanding of “writing or drawing” is getting highly abstract.

If an axe is a "gravity knife" then so is their understanding of that statute…
What the hell *is* a gravity knife?
Well historically it was actually a WWII parachuter's knife designed to automatically open in the event a jumper got stuck in a tree, so they could free themselves before they became German target practice. This happened enough they actually designed a knife for it. This knife was originally listed in the statutes along with switchblades during the 50's, the time of James Dean, "West Side Story," etc.
But under the current DA a "gravity knife" is any folding knife that can be opened with one hand. That means basically any folding knife other than a Swiss Army Knife is now illegal in NYC.

If art museums are the new churches, perhaps they should end the veneration of ambiguity and start serving our inner needs.
