This year’s presidential race has split Manhattan down the middle, according to data from the Federal Election Committee. Manhattan is a massive campaign contributor in general–half of the top 10 donor zip codes to both candidates are on the island–and its political fault line seems to lie somewhere in the middle of Central Park: Obama received $6.5 million in donations from four Upper West Side residents, while Romney’s $5.2 million Manhattan haul came exclusively from the Upper East Side. According to former mayor Ed Koch, it’s all about demographics. “People who live on the East Side live a more sedate lifestyle and tend to vote Republican,” he said. “Those who live on the West Side are more funky and liberal.”
