The New York Times reported on a technique many New Yorkers are using to navigate around the city: bikes! One man, Thomas Jarrels of Crown Heights, said he was a bike messenger in the ’80s, but never considered cycling to his job in Midtown until the storm forced him to–but now, he’ll continue to do it even after transit cleans up. “It saves money, and it’s less of a headache,” he said. “It gives you time to think, meditate and get your exercise on.”

According to Jason Jaramillo, the relative emptiness of lower Manhattan made for perfect biking conditions. “I just bombed all the way down Broadway right now — I think I saw five cars,” he said. “I wish it was always like this.”
