On September 10, 2011, directors Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady decided to follow infamous anti-Muslim pastor Terry Jones to Times Square, where he planned to give a speech to commemorate the anniversary of 9/11. They were filming for their forthcoming documentary, The Education of Mohammed Hussein, and hoped to capture Jones–who raised controversy last year when he publicly burned a Koran as part of a mock trial–in action. That’s what they found, but they also witnessed a group of people coming together to protest the speech.

The counter demonstration starts at around 1:40 in this video (which the New York Times won’t let us embed), when one supremely goofy dude gathers up the courage to start belting out the lyrics to a certain Beatles song (we’ll let you guess which one). Soon enough, several others join in, and for one cheesy-yet-powerful moment, the love drowns out the hate.
