These otherworldly photos of massive sand structures were taken right here in New York City. Photographer Stéphane Missier aka Charles le Brigand tells ANIMAL that the “crazy moon-like landscape and dunes” can be found at the “Jacob Riis Beach parking lot in the Rockaways,” and stand as an “eerie” reminder to the impact of Hurricane Sandy. The site is also off limits. “I took a couple of shots before getting kicked out.”

Any explanation?
I've been told this sand has been cleaned, siffted and sanitized of all debris and is awaiting to be distributed back along the shores of Rockaway where it all came from.
