Calling all American pop stars toting liberal values. Boy, do we have a cause for you.

Since self-proclaimed feminist punk band Pussy Riot stormed a Moscow Cathedral during services to perform their Anti-Putin protest anthem, they’ve been arrested, thrown in jail, tormented in custody and threatened with a seven-year sentence for their crime of… sacrilege! Their fate remains uncertain.

“I don’t understand why Western pop and rock stars don’t want to support their Russian colleagues,” Pussy Riot’s Nikolai Polozov has recently said. “There are many stars who speak out for various liberal values. Even Madonna, when she heard that St Petersburg plans to pass a homophobic law, said she plans to raise that question during her concerts in Moscow and St. Petersburg.” Not the greatest example, as St Petersburg is now Russia’s hub for prejudiced LGBTQ-targeting arrests and mass hate crime, and Moscow has just violently shut down a Gay Pride Parade.

Maybe fixing major, country-wide ethical issues is a bit out of grasp for American celebrities, but if we keep pretending that Pussy Riot is a punk band, it’s a small little step to demand justice for fellow musicians, isn’t it? Anyone besides an actual riot grrrl?

Psst. Don’t tell them that the band “associated” with Voina isn’t really a band, but rather a collective of vibrant, self-sacrificial lionesses, who intentionally put themselves in the wrath of Russia’s Medieval, severe laws about “offending religion,” to be punished for all the world to notice–a most noble, justified use of their sexuality and pure shtick. Tell them it’s band.
