A Crown Heights Documentary Filmed on Google Glass

October 8, 2013 | Andy Cush

2×1, a forthcoming documentary currently funding on Kickstarter, takes its name from two places: two miles by one mile, the dimensions of Crown Heights, the Brooklyn neighborhood where it’s set, and the two distinct communities–Caribbean people and Hasidic Jews–that make up the area’s one whole population.

Filmmaker Mendy Seldowitz, a Crown Heights native, hoped to get away from traditional documentary, which often presents its subjects through the perspective of the filmmaker. To do that, he and his collaborators used Google glass, handing the devices to anyone in the area who wanted to participate, so they could tell the story of their own neighborhood.

The team hopes to “to bring two distinct communities together to form one united neighborhood,” producer Hannah Roodman told the Daily News.

They’ve raised $2,724 of their $5,000 goal so far, with 24 days to go. Watch the pitch video for the film below.
