Someone apparently working their hardest to torpedo Bill de Blasio’s image as an outer-borough populist spent $8,000 on a white alba truffle as a gift for the mayor-elect at an auction in Italy over the weekend. How much truffle does that kind of cash get you? Just 305 grams, or about .67 pounds, apparently.
No word on who the buyer was, but it wasn’t even the biggest purchase of the day: another anonymous person dropped €90,000 (about $120,000) on a 950 gram truffle, which, as The Local points out, is more than three times the price of a similar quantity of gold. Do these things even taste that good?
