ANIMAL’s feature Artist’s Notebook asks artists to show us their original idea sketch next to a finished piece. This week, Eva and Franco Mattes tell us about their piece Catt (2010) and trolling Maurizio Cattelan.

Known for their provocative projects that involve and expose its willing and unwilling participants, Eva and Franco Mattes have stolen many little bits of famous art pieces, staged a suicide on Chat Roulette, hijacked a carousel from Chernobyl and reassembled it in a Manchester park. Their most recent project Emily’s Video will be on view in New York later this year.

It all started when we found this LOLCat and we ended up making a fake sculpture by Maurizio Cattelan with it.

The piece was exhibited as an actual work by Cattelan. We thought: let’s wear the mask of a famous artist and see what happens, will people realize it immediately? Will they say ‘this is his worst work ever?’ Or will they love it?

I guess the whole point was whether the anonymous internet is capable of ideas as long lasting as that of contemporary art.
