After a long delay, Banksy posted today’s Better Out Than In, piece, an oil painting of a Nazi gazing out at a mountain landscape this afternoon.
The artist writes that the work, entitled “The banality of the banality of evil,” is “a thrift store painting vandalised then re-donated to the thrift store.” It’s hanging on the wall at Housing Works Thrift Shop at 157 East 23rd Street. The piece will apparently be auctioned off on the website Bidding For Good tonight with a starting bid of $76,000.
According to an employee on the scene, Housing Works isn’t letting anyone inside the store until its press person arrives, which will happen at around 5PM. Until then, they’ve stationed a bodyguard by the window. The employee also says Team Banksy wasn’t given permission to hang the work.
UPDATE (7:55PM): Bid is currently at $152,200.
UPDATE 2 (10/30/13, 8:00AM): Bid is currently at $211,311.
