Crosswalk Painted Rainbow in Russia

August 16, 2013 | Kyle Chayka

A few days ago, someone painted the crosswalk outside of Russian Embassy in Sweden rainbow. This photo from VK (Russian Facebook) is the first instance that we know of where this protest is happening in Russia. Ekaterinburg, feel the rainbow!

Why is this a big deal? It’s illegal. It’s right.

While there isn’t any consensus on what the world outside of Russia should do about the so-called “anti-homosexual propaganda” bill (applicable to everyone attending the Winter 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi) or the systematic violence against LGBT it legitimizes across the country, there’s always the one form of protest Russia’s activists do best — street art.
