Medgar Evers College Preparatory Academy in Crown Heights is one of the highest rated public schools in New York, with a 94% African American student body, a 94% average daily attendance and the rate of students reading at grade level 40% higher than the city average. But they never got around building a gym.
With the emphasis on test scores, advanced courses, even tuition-free college credits available at a nearby college, the state requirement for physical education is low priority, until, of course graduation time. To make up for missing gym periods, Medgar Evers students spend hours in a row running down a linoleum basement hallway and doing push-ups, sometimes coming in at 7am for “zero Period” and taking three and four periods of makeup gym their senior year, DNA Info reports.
Think of that next time you roll into work at a leisurely 9.30am.
