Saturday marks the beginning of the end for one of New York City’s grimiest remaining spots, as the Bloomberg administration prepares to level Willets Point, Queens to make room for a shiny new retail complex. The city is offering 12 months rent to business owners willing to vacate by this week, and 6 months to those who’d rather wait until January. After January, they be kicked out without any compensation.
Currently, the Citi Field-adjacent area houses mechanics, auto body shops, and the like. According to WNYC, many business owners “can’t find comparable locations zoned for industrial use and fear they’ll have to leave the city completely and lose their customers.”
