George Lucas Museum Will Feature Art, Not Memorabilia

March 6, 2013 | Eugene Reznik

George Lucas, recently retired and now sitting on a roughly $2 billion pension, is planning on opening a museum in San Francisco. The screenwriter-turned-curator will not be featuring Star Wars-inspired art and memorabilia; one of those exists already. Instead, he’ll be sharing original work from his own private “thousands-strong” collection, which he started when he was in film school with $25 comic prints. Now, he apparently has enough visual art and sculpture to rotate exhibitions every six months for over six years.

In an interview, Lucas shows he’s got a particular soft spot for sentimental, Saturday Evening Post-style American painters and illustrators Norman Rockwell, N.C. Wyeth and Maxfield Parish. Their imagery might be a bit hokey, and he doesn’t expect the selection will get much critical praise, but Lucas says what inspires him about the works is their ability to tell stories in a single frame.
