Charity as Art: Give Back and Win With Dabit.org

April 22, 2013 | Kyle Chayka

Continuing our coverage of  Rhizome’s Seven on Seven conference, here’s another exciting project born from a one-day intense session of design and planning between and an artist and a technologist.

British-born installation artist Matthew Ritchie was paired with technologist Billy Chasen of turntable.fm. They created dabit.org — a charity website that “gives back.” The premise of the site is simple: “Every day money is collected for 3 charities. At the end of the day, 50% of all money collected goes to the charities and the other 50% goes to one of the people who donated that day.”

Chasen and Ritchie explained their main challenge was in automating the process — it is surprisingly easy to begin accepting payment with credit cards, yet quite difficult to donate money directly to a charity. They worked it out.

The two were also quite interested in seeing what people are doing on the internet in real-time — much like the community aspect of turntable.fm. With dabit.org you can actually view donations live throughout the day.

Way to bend the golden rule, dabit.org.
