Greek Architects Want to 13-Up the Guggenheim Museum

January 30, 2013 | Julia Dawidowicz

Athens-based architect firm Oiio has come up with a very ambitious proposal to recreate New York’s Guggenheim in their city. The proposed structure would maintain Frank Lloyd Wright’s famous white spiraling ramps, but with the, er, minor addition of thirteen extra floors. That would make it over three times taller than the original.

Don’t worry, New Yorkers, lest you get locker room anxiety. Our Gugg would still be the original! It’s an hommage, you know? Oiio respects that. Oiio explains that their architects had no choice but to build upon the original form for fear that “New Yorkers would suddenly feel as if they have lost a dear old friend.”

Oiio is calling this “the vertical completion of Guggenheim” which sounds like quite a trek. Maybe it will come equipped with official winding trail stops, you know, some camping areas — for visitors who want to take on the entire museum in one… long… trip.
