Grim Reaper to Hand Out Bloodstained MetroCards Today

February 7, 2013 | Julia Dawidowicz

NYC’s Public Transit Union really, really wants people to stop dying in the subway. While the MTA is busy working on some high-tech, costly solutions to prevent subway deaths — some of which will allegedly take decades to implement — the Public Transit Union has come up with an immediate plan of action: blood-splattered “Metro(death)Cards.” Yes, this is completely for real.

These mock MetroCards will be handed out in Lower Manhattan this afternoon and feature an image of the Grim Reaper on the back and will debrief disturbed viewers on the union’s “slow-down plan.” And if these bloodstained trinkets aren’t not enough for shock value, an actual Grim Reaper will be present at the City Hall N/R stop, right across the street from today’s emergency hearing on subway death prevention strategy.

With 55 recorded incidents of people getting killed by trains in 2012 (the highest death toll since 2007), and after last night’s L train tragedy, a bit of gory, urgent creativity can’t hurt.
