In Sandy-Damaged Areas, Many Are Bearing the Cold Snap With No Heat

January 24, 2013 | Andy Cush

As you probably already know, the weather has been ungodly cold in New York this week. According to the Weather Channel, it’s 15 degrees Fahrenheit in Brooklyn at the time of this writing, and feels like 3 with wind chill factored in. And while these temperatures are difficult for anyone to bear, for many residents of the areas hardest hit by Hurricane Sandy who still have broken boilers, they’re nearly impossible.

According to Peter Spencer, spokesman for Mayor’s Office of Housing Recovery, the city has restored heat, hot water or power to 12,247 residences in 7,112 buildings–but there are still some 1,893 buildings to go.

“I’ve been through a lot,” said Daniel Choi, a Gerritsen Beach resident whose heat remains out. “It just feels like another problem after another problem.”
