IRL M.C. Escher Staircase Under Construction in London

May 28, 2013 | Kyle Chayka

Using St Paul’s Cathedral as a backdrop, London’s dRMM Architects designed and plans to build Endless Staircase, a large wooden sculpture based on the famous lithographs by M.C. Escher.

The large and dizzying structure will be built in collaboration with the American Hardwood Export Council as well as Arup, an engineering consultant service who have set aside approximately 144 cubic feet of Tulipwood for the project’s construction.

The company’s founding director Alex di Rijke describes the project as “a three-dimensional exercise in composition, structure and scale and as both a marker and meeting place.”

The sculpture, once completed will be on display during the London Design Festival taking place this coming September.

Disclaimer: This is probably not going to happen.
