J Dilla’s Uncle Is Opening a Donut Shop in Detroit

August 28, 2013 | Andy Cush

Turns out “The Last Donut of the Night” wasn’t the last donut after all. The Detroit News is reporting that Herman Hayes, uncle to the late, impossibly great hip-hop producer J Dilla, will open a donut shop in Dilla’s honor in Detroit’s Harmonie Park.

The shop, to be dubbed Dilla’s Delights, will feature all-organic treats with winking names like Fantastic Fritters and McNasty Macaroons as well as coffee, tea, and juices. Of course the shop itself makes reference to Donuts, the magnum opus instrumental album the producer assembled on his deathbed.

“I want to honor my nephew in the right way, and this is a good way to do it,” said Hayes. “Not by putting out another album, but putting a sustainable business with his name on it that I plan on being in Detroit long after I’m gone. It’s just what I can give back to him for giving us that music.”
