Miley Cyrus’s “We Can’t Stop,” Covered, Remixed, Reinterpreted
37 Times

July 16, 2013 | Andy Cush

Here it is: a compilation of 37 remixes, covers, reinterpretations, and utter destructions of Miley Cyrus’s “We Can’t Stop,” curated by Mabson Enterprises aka Kyle Mabson, the same guy who brought you 47 “Call Me Maybe” covers last year. Nothing here is straightforward–there’s a right-wing Christian sermonizing about homosexuality and high fructose corn syrup over a cheesy solo piano version of the track, there’s a Meat Puppets-like westerny version, there’s the “We Can’t Stop Stop Sludge Metal Chopped & Screwed Garageband Edit,” which is strangely affecting and sounds exactly as you might imagine. There’s a fucking Evanescence mashup.

As with last time, Dan Deacon turns in the most conceptually interesting take, removing the second and fourth beats of every measure and smashing everything else back together. Surprisingly (or not), it works just about as well as the original track.
