New York Art World:
The 8-Bit Video Game

February 7, 2013 | Eugene Reznik

Indie developer Pippin Barr, known for his 8-bit simulation of Marina Abramović’s The Artist is Present, has expanded his scope in an ambitious attempt to render the entirety of the New York City visual art world as video game. The biting microcosm Art Game offers you the experience of battling the impenetrable vision of one curator in a quest to exhibit in a group show at the MoMA.

Experience the exhilaration of making art you really believe in! Experience the agony of rejection by the curatorial team! Consider selling out and just making what people seem to want! Change your mind again and follow your dreams! Be a star of the art world! Be a horrible failure! Be an artist!

Choose your protagonist — the minimalist painter, the sculptor or the video duo, each with their own process modeled on classic games Snake, Tetris and Space Wars — and embark on an art-making journey all the way to the opening reception.

Hyperallergic’s (and ANIMAL’s) Kyle Chayka details all the tribulations of the artist/avatar in this feat of immersive journalism.
