New York Proposes “Revenge Porn” Ban

October 7, 2013 | Marina Galperina

Last week, California became the second state (with New Jersey) to ban “revenge porn,” making it a criminal offense punishable by up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine according. New York senators are proposing similar and harsher measures:

Revenge porn refers to nude and sexually explicit photos and videos that are meant to be private, but are posted on the Internet primarily with intent to cause serious emotional distress in its victims. The explicit images posted on revenge porn web sites are often accompanied by personal information, such an individual’s home and work addresses and links to their Facebook page.

Here’s the kicker.

This legislation makes the non-consensual disclosure of sexually explicit images a class A misdemeanor and the person who discloses the photograph is also subject to a $30,000 fine.

Interesting times.
