NYC Strippers Deserve Same Protection As Any Other Workers, Court Says

September 11, 2013 | Andy Cush

Breaking news: stripping is a real  job! And people who do it in NYC deserve the same protective laws as any other laborers in the city, a federal judge just ruled. Dancers at Midtown’s Rick’s Cabaret filed a class action lawsuit against the club, arguing that they were “denied wages and required to pay a variety of fees to the club,” according to the AP. The judge ruled in the dancers’ favor, arguing that because they were the “main attraction,” they shouldn’t be treated as independent contractors, and therefore deserve protections like minimum wage. Rick’s, unsurprisingly, plans to appeal.
