1st! Queens Public School
Goes Full Vegetarian

PS244 is now the first school in the nation to offer an all-vegetarian menu, forgoing “mystery meat” — and all meat. The transition didn’t happen overnight. Since opening in 2008, the school began to offer vegetarian options more frequently, in turn greatly reducing the amount of days in which they served the usual elementary school fair of breaded oval-shaped chicken-product, or whatever it is we are feeding children these days. Instead, they’re serving “tofu vegetable wraps, vegetarian chili served with brown rice, and black bean and cheddar quesadillas served with salsa and red roasted potatoes.”

The school’s Principal an Co-founder Robert Groff is pretty triumphant about it.

The founding of our school was based on health and nutrition and teaching kids how to make healthy choices in the belief that they would be more successful academically and in their life,” Groff said. “But then we started to watch the kids. One, what they would bring in to school, and two, what they would gravitate towards in the cafeteria.

Hurrah.
