Street Art-Like Campaign Demands Sex Worker Rights in Argentina

June 6, 2013 | Julia Dawidowicz

When you see a sexy lady giving you bedroom eyes on the street corner, all sorts of things come to mind — her struggle as a mother probably isn’t among them. In Argentina, where (non-organized) prostitution is legal, a national sex workers’ union recently launched a street art campaign hoping to spread their message: Sex workers are real people too, and they deserve protection and respect.

The clever wheat paste ads show a hyper-sexualized woman on one side of a building, connected to children that pedestrians can only see when they turn the corner. Next to the children, a startling statistic: “86% if sex workers are mothers. We need a law to regulate our work.”

Commissioned by the Association of Women Sex Workers in Argentina, and designed by Ogilvy & Mathers Buenos Aires, the ad is part of an ongoing campaign to have prostitution recognized as a legitimate, regulated and protected profession.
