Photographer Detained for “Interfering” With an Investigation From Ninety Feet Away

August 16, 2013 | Kyle Chayka

Photographer as well as rights advocate Shawn Nee was detained by members of the LAPD for allegedly “interfering” with an ongoing investigation by taking photos, but from over ninety-feet away.

The above video thoughtfully illustrates how the public’s basic First Ammendment right to photograph police officers doing their job is continuously being impeded upon. It also goes to show exactly far away Nee was in relation to where the officers were, so much in fact that the officers were required to walk down a long driveway, enter their patrol cars, and drive their to where Nee was working in order to eventually detain the young photographer.

Shawn Nee goes on to say that:

People have the right to take pictures in a public space and that includes photographing [police]…

People have the right to know what goes on in their communities and in public.

Nee is currently a plaintiff in a lawsuit against the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department along with two other photographers and is being represented by the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California.
