Watch Cyclists Rally Through Brooklyn for the Red Hook Crit

March 29, 2013 | Bucky Turco

On Saturday, the Red Hook Criterium returns to the streets of Brooklyn for its sixth year. Once an unsanctioned bike fixed-gear bike race akin to the spirit of messenger-style alley cats, it now has a sponsor: Rockstar Games. The notorious video game company that’s known for creating bleeding edge titles such as Grand Theft Auto, Max Payne, and Red Dead Redemption, has come onboard to support the event and will donate all the proceeds from socks and caps to Restore Red Hook, a charity devoted to rebuilding the waterfront neighborhood that was ravaged by Sandy. Qualifying heats begin at 3:30PM with the main event — a 24-lap race on a three-quarter-mile course — scheduled to take place around 9PM. For those looking to watch riders whizz around, head over to the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal and for the tech-obsessed, yes there’s even an app.
