Virginia Tech has just staged the operatic works of Mozart within the indie sandbox video game Minecraft. Watch “OPERAcraft” above (it starts at 24:00) to see the live performance voiced by a group of Virginia Tech music majors from a four-story stage construction while a cast of Minecraft characters controlled by highschool students are projected onto 42-foot-by-26-foot screen.
The torches and stairs normally found in-world are fitting representations of a classic opera set. The lip-synced mouth action was developed with Pd-L2Ork and a custom Minecraft mod. All the others movements — desperate climbing of stairs, slowly hanging heads, etc — are quite intricate and expressive, considering they’re WALKING POLYGONS made out of GIANT PIXELS.
