Afghanistan’s First Indie TV Network, the Documentary

February 21, 2013 | Eugene Reznik

Premiering at SXSW this year on March 11 is Australian director Eva Orner’s documentary The Network, chronicling the rise of TOLO TV, the first independent television network in Afghanistan established in the wake of the American invasion.

Launched in 2004, TOLO has since grown to employ 800 Afghan news producers and is one of the first local entertainment sources operating in decades. “But,” Orner writes, “as the country faces the impending withdrawal of foreign troops, and with security rapidly deteriorating, the team behind TOLO TV are set to face their biggest challenge yet.”

That’s indie.
