We’re This Excited About the Gutai Show at the Guggenheim

January 2, 2013 | Marina Galperina

This is Saburo Murakami. He is Passing Through in 1956. He is very excited. He should be very excited because he is part of Gutai, the postwar Japan’s most influential artistic movement, the hotbed of avant-garde of the ’50s and ’60s.

One of the most anticipated art exhibits of 2013, the Guggenheim kicks off a Gutai “Splendid Playground” retrospective next month with more than 120 objects of “radical experimentation” from 25 artists — from gestural abstraction and post-constructivist abstraction painting to performance/light/kinetic/sound/”playful” art, all spiraling upwards Guggenheim’s beautiful innards, progressing thematically and chronologically, oh God, oh God, yes. Gutai: Splendid Playground, Feb 15 – May 8, Guggenheim, New York

Oh wait. One more thing.

This Gutai’s Atsuko Tanak and she is wearing an Electric Dress, a kimono made from functional neon lights.
