Mayor Michael Bloomberg signed 30 bills into law yesterday, his penultimate day in office, including the much-discussed ban on smoking electronic cigarettes in public places. To protest, one woman lit and smoked a cigarette–the old fashioned, tobacco-burning kind–inside City Hall.
“This is a final image in your reign that couldn’t be more antithetical to the legacy you desperately want depicted. I return the respect,” said Audrey Silk of the Citizens Lobbying Against Smoker Harassment as she lit up. “Good people disobey bad laws.”
After Bloomberg thanked Silk for her comments, a security guard grabbed the stogie and ushered her and a fellow smoker out of the room.
Your passion for something that’s slowly destroying you and the people around you is mystifying, Ms. Silk, but your willingness to stand up for it is admirable. And hey, at least you don’t have to put up with Bloomie for much longer.
