Bratton Wants to Give Guns Back to De-Armed Cops

January 24, 2014 | Andy Cush

In an effort to put more cops on the street, as many as two dozen police officers who lost their guns after shootings could be de-armed under a new plan from NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton, the Daily News is reporting. Cops are put under modified duty any time they fire their weapons on the job while the department investigates whether the shooting was justified. “But he also thinks that when a cop is in the clear, he should be back out there enforcing the law, not doing paperwork,” one police source said.

Of course, not every cop who gets reinstated to full-duty is a heroic model for law enforcement everywhere. Kenneth Boss, one of the cops who in 1999 shot and killed Amadou Diallo — an unarmed, innocent black man — got his gun back in 2012.
